BIOWISE Report Highlights Emerging Biotechnology Opportunities in the Wood, Textile and Furniture Sectors

·

How can biotechnology drive innovation and sustainability in the wood, textile and furniture industries? The new BIOWISE report (WP2-A2) explores the emerging opportunities, technological developments and skills needed to support the transformation of these sectors.

As European industries move towards more sustainable, circular and resource-efficient production models, biotechnology is opening up new possibilities for industrial innovation. Understanding these opportunities is essential to identifying future market needs and preparing the workforce for the challenges ahead.

The BIOWISE report provides an overview of the biotechnology landscape across the three sectors, focusing on four key areas:

  • Emerging trends: identifying technological developments and innovation opportunities shaping the wood, textile and furniture industries.
  • Industrial applications and best practices: showcasing practical examples of biotechnology solutions and their potential to transform industrial processes and products.
  • Market and regulatory frameworks: examining economic opportunities, barriers to innovation, standards, patents and relevant policy frameworks.
  • Skills and knowledge gaps: identifying the competencies that vocational education and training (VET), higher education and lifelong learning need to address.

Developed through collaborative research involving all BIOWISE project partners, the report builds on thematic priorities proposed and validated through consultation sessions with stakeholders from industry, education and research. This participatory approach helps ensure that the findings reflect both the evolving needs of the sectors and the latest technological developments.

From research to learning pathways

The report will serve as a foundation for the development of the BIOWISE elective course, supporting the design of relevant learning content and helping future professionals acquire the interdisciplinary skills needed to foster biotechnology-driven innovation.

By bridging research, education and industrial practice, BIOWISE aims to support companies, academic institutions, training providers and policymakers in building a more resilient, competitive and sustainable industrial ecosystem, in line with Europe’s green and digital transitions.
